Most climbers think hangboarding protects their fingers, but did you know… it's built to make them stronger, not to keep them moving.

Strength is one job. Keeping the slow parts of your fingers moving, a little, every single day, is another. That old doorway ritual only does the first one, and it can cost more than it gives your hands.

Stronger is one job. Protected is another.

A hangboard is load. You hang, the part of your finger that pulls gets stronger, and it gets stronger fast. We are not going to tell you that doesn't work, and we won't pretend our block out-trains one.

But stronger isn't protected. The tendons and pulleys in your fingers adapt far more slowly than the muscle that pulls, and they have very little blood supply. The idea behind the other job is simple: keep them moving, a little, every day, all the way open as well as closed, at a load so light you could do it with your coffee.

The best routine is the one you are still doing next year

Most of us have the band, the putty or the gripper somewhere in a drawer. Finger routines die because they are chores. The doorway ritual is a chore with a risk attached. The one that lasts is the one you actually want to do.

So we made the other job a game

The Boulder Block is real climbing holds on a solid wood block: 12 resin holds that unscrew and move. You climb it with your fingers only, from one hold to the next, like solving a problem on a wall.

It weighs just under a pound, so nothing about it is a max hang. Draw a card from the Challenge Deck, 16 routes across 4 levels, find the holds in order and try to finish. The plan we teach is one route a day. It's a game you play with your fingers, not an exercise, which is why people keep picking it up.

Keep hanging if you like

The Boulder Block isn't a hangboard replacement and it isn't treatment for anything. If a finger hurts, have someone who can examine your hand look at it. This is the other half: the light, daily, game-shaped one.

In their own words

"keeps my fingers moving and my brain engaged when i'm not at the wall"

"it's a lot harder than it looks, but I'm getting better."
